Nearly 45 volunteers participated in a community clean-up day March 23rd on Mare Island. Vallejo residents from on and off the island, plus members of Fighting Back Partnership, Global Center for Success and the City of Vallejo participated in the group effort. After a brief gathering at the school, teams of residents fanned out to gather trash and debris from Flagship Drive to the HWY 37 entrance. Volunteers from Fighting Back Partnership and workers from The City of Vallejo joined with the group to gather illegally dumped trash including mattresses, appliances, tires, paint and even FIVE Christmas trees from the island. A large dumpster from Recology was filled to overflowing at the end of the day.
The residents of the community are tired of the north Mare Island blight and is working together and at the same time reaching out the the City of Vallejo for help. It was great to see that they are responding. The City of Vallejo now understands that we care about Mare Island and working together we can improve this most unique place on the bay.
