Mare Island Foundation Presses for Submarine Memorial

The Mare Island Historic Park Foundation is pushing forward with their plan to move the historic sail of the Mariano G. Vallejo submarine to Alden Park. The giant 65-ton structure has been unceremoniously sitting near Dry Dock 1 since since being re-located back in Dec 2009.

Over the years, efforts to find a home for the 40-foot tall submarine conning tower and sail in Alden Park has faced hurdles including the requirement of a report to review the “appropriateness” of the Cold War Era park addition per the Mare Island reuse plan.

According to the Times Herald, the foundation resubmitted its relocation plan and members have been told the issue may be on the Architectural Heritage and Landmarks Commission (AHLC) agenda in the coming months.

Hopefully a solution can be found to the stalemate soon. The present situation is unacceptaple for what should be a memorial and tribute to those who served and worked on Mare Island Naval Shipyard.
The 40-foot tall submarine conning tower and sail from the USS Mariano G. Vallejo submarine is moved to it's new home on Mare Island. Phil Joy, a house mover from Benicia, donated his expertise, crew and equipment to slowly move the 65 ton-sail between buildings and along California Avenue to its new location at Building Waterways 2 adjacent to historic Dry Dock 1. Local residents, workers and business owners gathered to watch history from the cold-war era pass by. (Kim Kulish)
