Mare Island’s Historic “Building 680” is being reborn as a new home to factory built homes made by builder Blu Homes, Inc.
After being dark since 1996, the iconic structure that bears the sign “Mare Island Naval Shipyard” is once again shining brightly across the water.
The nearly 260,000 square-foot structure, known as the periscope building, is being transformed into a modern factory that will produce complete green energy efficient steel framed homes that are shipped by truck and unfolded into place at the owners homesite.
The Massachusetts based company, just recently held a 2-day job fair to recruit new employees and hopes to hire 80 workers to build approximately 70 homes on the island in the first year. As the housing market improves and demand increases, so will hiring and production.
This is great news for Mare Island, Vallejo and the region.
