The “Vallejo Peoples Garden,” located on Mare island won a $25,000 on-line grant competition sponsored by Nature’s Path Organics.
Through the support of local community groups, agencies and businesses, the once barren strip of land at the corner of East Poplar and Oscar Streets, on Mare Island, is now being transformed into a thriving hub of community activity, organic gardening and nutrition. With the grant in-hand, the organizer’s goal is to build a network of public gardens across the city of Vallejo, to serve the local community with fresh produce and to create spaces for outdoor learning and volunteer opportunities.
Just this past Saturday, volunteers got down and dirty as they installed larger raised garden beds filled with a variety of vegetables. Plus, the local AAA awarded the group with additional financial support. The Vallejo People’s Garden has a Facebook page to share their progress and to announce upcoming activities. All are welcome to sign up and pitch in.
