I was surprised and quite honored to win “Best of Show” for photography this weekend with my image “Moonlight Shelter No. 1” in the San Francisco Bay Flyway Festival’s: 2010 Bay Area Wetlands to Ridgetop’s Art Exhibit. In addition, my image “Moonlight Shelter No. 2” was recognized with an Honorable Mention award in the “Best of Mare Island” photography category. Both images were made at night of several World War II era bomb shelters in Alden Park. They are a stark reminder of a different time on Mare Island when it was the premiere naval base on the west coast. Exhibit organizers told me that 10 pieces of art in the exhibit were sold during the weekend festival. That is great news, because portions of each sale go to help fund next year’s flyway events. It was also nice to see so many people from all over the bay area explore, hike and appreciate the historic and natural beauty of the island.
