A large Success “dog tag” rattles in the wind on “The Spirit Ship.” The sculpture, located near the highest point on the island, has a “dog tag” for many of the ships built and repaired on Mare Island. It was created as a tribute to the workers of Mare Island Naval Shipyard. I thought this was an appropriate image to start the new year with. For details on how to see the Spirit Ship and other historic sights along the southern tip of Mare Island go to www.mareislandpreserve.org . The preserve is open every second Saturday of the month for free. Come visit, hike, picnic, paint or photograph one of the bay area’s historic treasures.
